Turbo Balancing Services

Send in your turbo components for professional balancing. We offer both component balancing and high-speed VSR balancing for assembled units.

What We Need From You

  • Compressor wheel
  • Locknut
  • Turbine shaft
  • Thrust parts

VSR Balancing Note

VSR balancing at operating speed is available only for units assembled by our technicians to ensure the safety of our staff and equipment and guarantee an accurate result.

VSR balancing replicates actual operating conditions - balancing where it matters, at boost speeds, not just at low RPM.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked
Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often from customers shipping turbos to us from across the country.

How much does a turbocharger rebuild cost? +
We cannot give you an accurate number until we have torn down your turbocharger and assessed the condition of every component. The cost of a rebuild is determined by what we find inside -- bearing condition, wheel condition, housing wear, seal condition, and what caused the failure in the first place. A turbo with a clean failure and undamaged wheels costs significantly less to rebuild than one that has sustained wheel contact damage or debris ingestion. Quoting a flat rate before teardown either means you are paying for damage we have not found yet, or we are underpricing work that needs to be done. We do neither. The process is simple: ship us your turbo, we tear it down, document everything, and give you an accurate quote based on actual condition. You approve the repair before we proceed.
How do I get started? +
Submit a repair intake form at repair.theboostlab.com. The form captures your vehicle information, the turbo you are sending, and any symptoms or history you can share. Once submitted we will confirm receipt and provide shipping instructions. Ship your turbo to us at 37833 Pineapple Ave Unit A, Dade City, FL 33523. We accept turbos from customers nationwide -- most customers ship their turbo via UPS or FedEx Ground. Pack it securely, drain any residual oil before shipping, and include a copy of your repair form submission.
How long does a turbo rebuild take? +
Turnaround time depends on current shop volume and parts availability for your specific turbocharger. Most standard rebuilds are completed within 5-10 business days of teardown. Complex repairs, rare turbos requiring sourced components, or large-frame performance turbos may take longer. We will give you a realistic timeline when we quote the repair -- we do not give optimistic estimates and then miss them. If your situation is time-sensitive, let us know when you submit the intake form and we will tell you honestly whether we can meet your timeline.
I have a twin turbo car. Do I need to send both turbos? +
Yes. On twin turbo applications -- Nissan GT-R, BMW N54, Audi 2.7T biturbo, Ferrari F40, and others -- both turbos should be rebuilt together. The two units operate as a matched pair. Even if only one shows obvious symptoms, the twin has been operating under the same conditions and is at the same point in its wear cycle. Replacing one and leaving the other creates an imbalanced system where the rebuilt turbo compensates for the degraded twin, shortening its life significantly. Send both. We rebuild them as a matched set and VSR balance both to the same specification.
What is VSR balancing and why does it matter? +
VSR stands for Vibration Sorting Rig. It is a high-speed balancing process that spins the assembled turbo cartridge at operating speeds and measures vibration to detect imbalance. A turbo that passes a low-speed bench balance but fails VSR will vibrate at operating speed, accelerating bearing wear and reducing the service life of the rebuild. Every turbocharger we rebuild is VSR balanced before it leaves the shop. This is not an optional upgrade -- it is part of every rebuild we do.
How do I know if my turbo needs to be rebuilt? +
Common symptoms include blue or white smoke from the exhaust at startup or under boost, oil consumption without visible external leaks, a whining or grinding noise from the turbo, boost pressure lower than expected, or oil in the intake piping or intercooler. On some turbos -- particularly those that have experienced oil starvation -- bearing wear is progressive and presents no audible symptoms until the damage is advanced. If your vehicle has had an engine event such as a spun bearing, timing chain failure, or coolant-in-oil situation, have the turbo inspected even if it sounds fine.
Do you offer a warranty on rebuilt turbochargers? +
Yes. Our rebuilt turbochargers are warranted against defects in parts and workmanship. The warranty does not cover damage caused by improper installation, oil starvation from a blocked oil feed line, engine-side contamination introduced after the rebuild, or foreign object damage. A properly installed turbo on a healthy engine with clean oil will not fail due to a rebuild deficiency -- and if it does, we stand behind our work. Contact us directly if you have any concerns after installation.
Do you service turbos from all vehicle makes and models? +
We service turbochargers from virtually every make and platform -- domestic, import, diesel, gasoline, OEM, and aftermarket performance turbos including large-frame race turbos. Our brand and platform pages above cover the most commonly serviced applications in detail. If your turbo is not listed, contact us before shipping -- we will tell you honestly whether it is something we can service. There are a small number of platforms we do not service, such as the HKS GT1000 and GT1000+ which use a proprietary non-rebuildable architecture. We will always tell you upfront if your turbo falls into that category.
